Burnet softball lets play do the talking in win against Lampasas
The Burnet High School softball team annihilated Lampasas 9-0 March 24 to stay unbeaten in District 24-4A play.
Next up is a showdown with the other district leader, Jarrell, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, in Jarrell.
Before the Lampasas contest, fans of both programs enjoyed some friendly banter back and forth.
“They’re rival schools, they all know each other,” Burnet head coach Hailey Wooten said. “Our girls didn’t do a lot of talking. I’m proud of my kids for letting their play do the talking.”
The Lady Dawgs’ bats were the first to offer a response by generating three runs in the first inning. In all, Burnet had 12 hits, which showed each athlete played her part in delivering.
“They all hit the ball,” Wooten said. “They’re aggressive this year in the box. All but two got hits. It says a lot about the depth. Some hit balls right to people. We had four strikeouts as a team.”
Burnet sophomore pitcher Presely Crawford led the defense by striking out 12 and allowing two runs in seven complete innings. Lampasas freshman pitcher Brooklyn Farmer was credited with the loss.
“(Crawford) knew how much the game meant,” Wooten said. “Presely took it in. She decided ‘I’m just going to show them with my play.’ She was in control all night. Lampasas is a good hitting team. (Farmer) is a good pitcher.”
The coach noted that Crawford’s mental toughness and unwillingness to let the atmosphere and things she can’t control get to her. That’s one of her strengths that her teammates see.
“She has a presence about her,” Wooten said. “You just trust her. She has good command on her pitches, she has good velocity. She has it all.”
And when the Lady Badgers did make contact with the ball, the Lady Dawgs made all the defensive plays.
“The defense backed her up,” the coach said. “That’s what we expect. I think it’s very important the defense was able to stay engaged, to make plays.”
She noted the numerous fans in attendance made the contest a great atmosphere for the players and believes the Lady Dawgs will experience much of the same at Jarrell.
“It’s awesome we have the opportunity to play for first place on the road,” she said. “(My players) are going to look at it as another game. They’re just going to show up and do the job and let our play do the talking.”
